WSBT — The 12-week medical weight loss program ended a couple weeks ago. Kirk Mason, Cari Peugeot and Kelli Cheatham all survived the Why Weight? challenge and the friendly competition that came with it.

At the beginning of their journey, Memorial Bariatric & Weight Loss Dr. Scott Eschowsky said most of the country would be considered overweight right now.

"Up to 2/3 of people are actually overweight," he said.

Before beginning Why Weight, Kirk, Cari and Kelli were a little overweight — eating too much and not exercising enough.

Now, the difference is easy to see. During one recent WSBT First Thing in the Morning broadcast, Kirk Mason said he's doing a lot of painting at his house and a pair of old shorts just fell off one day.

During the program, Kirk lost 25.5 pounds, Kelli lost 14 pounds and Cari lost 13 pounds. Together, that's 52.5 pounds!

That means three months of hard work obviously paid off. They did it with the help of our fitness guru Greg, and dietitians Julie and Laura at Memorial Bariatric & Weight Loss Center.

That meant writing down everything they ate: keeping track of fats, proteins, carbohydrates and calories.

All three morning show personalities have lost a lot of fat everywhere. Kelli lost almost 22 pounds of body fat, turning some of that into muscle. Kirk dropped 19 pounds of fat and Cari lost about 7.5 pounds of fat.

But the competition wasn't based strictly on how much was lost. Kirk, Cari and Kelli decided to focus on the percentage of body weight they shed.

Based on the percentage of body weight lost, the winner of WSBT's Why Weight challenge is First Thing in the Morning Meteorologist Cari Peugeot. She dropped 10.9 percent of her body weight. She barely edged Kirk who lost 10.6 percent. Kelli lost 7.5 percent of her body weight.

To Jason: I'm not knocking the program, I'm knocking the contention that 2/3 of the country is overweight. Working out is great, but the government trying to scare people to be healthier by using bad information is bogus.

OK, OK, Overweight SCAM! I stand corrected. You're less overweight than me. I'm 6' and 205 lbs with a 34" waist (almost "obese" according to the government) but I'm in good shape as well. I just hate to see people knocking a program like this one that encourages fitness. There are way too many truly overweight people out there to just ignore it.

You don't need to be over weight to diet and exercise. Diet doesn't necessarily mean you are over weight and need to do something about it, it can also mean eating healthier. I started exercising at the beginning of the year (no it is not the New Year resolution) and feel so much better. I have more energy and actually crave less junk food.

Congrats guys - good job! I've lost almost 100 pounds in a little over a year - by changing diet and exercising. I went from a size 24 to a size 10, and feel better both emotionally and physically than I have in probably 30 years. It's the hardest thing I think I've ever done in my life, but IT IS WORTH IT!

To Jason: Well by the government's biased scale I am. However, I am 5'11" 195 lbs and have a 32 waist, so you tell me

"Overweight SCAM", you're obviously overweight. Anyone who sees this as a scam is probably just too lazy to lose weight and trying to justify it.

It IS a scam, and the government doesnt use body fat percentage, they use BMI. The problem is the media has us so conditioned that if someone doesnt look like a runway model then they're obese, even if they have a healthy weight. In fact, the CDC has said that people who are a little "overweight" by the scam standards are actually healthier and live longer. Funny that. So pull your finger out of your throat and pick up a steak.

You are killing me. Are you serious? Have you been out of your house in the last decade. There are obese and fat people everywhere. This is one of the main reasons health care is out of control. Too many lazy do nothing people in our society. You are right, body builders are considered obese if their weight is too high compared to their height. Do you know how many health problems those people have. You should go by your %body fat, not BMI.

People who say most of the country is overweight is falling for the scam the government started in 1996 to make people think they were fat by arbitrarily lowering what is considered fat on the highly inaccurate Body Mass Index scale, or BMI. According to the BMI, most bodybuilders are considered obese. Think about that the next time you hear about the "obesity epidemic"
