HOLTVILLE — Students, teachers and parents at Finley Elementary School celebrated the school’s spring open house with food, music and songs here Thursday.
The event serves as a fundraiser for the Parent Teacher Organization and a chance for parents to see how their students will finish out the year, said Lilian Guzman, a fourth-grade teacher.
“We have the (standardized test) coming up soon so the open house helps parents see how we are preparing for that,” Guzman said.
This is the school’s second largest fundraiser of the year, which helps provide the school and teachers with a few supplies.
“The PTO recently purchased iPads for each classroom,” Guzman said. “It’s nice to introduce this type of technology into the classroom and use it as a learning tool. The students seem to enjoy it.”
The event also gave the Finley Band the opportunity to showcase their hard work to the community.
“We’re playing about five songs,” said Ashley Ruvalcaba, a 12-year-old sixth-grader. “We’ve been practicing for a few months during school. It’s fun and interesting.”
The fundraising efforts also help make field trips for the students possible, which Georgina Camacho appreciates as a mother.
“The PTO has been doing a lot for the school,” Camacho said. “They’ve been able to purchase a lot of necessities, which is so important.”
Camacho said she was happy to see a large turnout of community members at the event in support of the school.
“It’s definitely growing,” Camacho said. “It’s nice to see all the people here supporting the education of the students.”
