To meet the 53-man roster limit, the Seahawks on Friday waived, among others, third-string QB Josh Portis, leaving Seattle with just two quarterbacks on its roster, and also wide receivers Deon Butler, Ricardo Lockette and former UW player Jermaine Kearse.
Also cut was Seattle’s fifth-round draft choice this year -- linebacker Korey Toomer out of Idaho.
Portis, who was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2011, was a popular backup quarterback in Seattle. It’s unknown if Seattle will go into the regular season with just rookie starting QB Russell Wilson and backup Matt Flynn on the roster or if the team will sign someone later.
Butler was a third-round draft choice in 2009 out of Penn State; he suffered a broken leg in December 2010 and missed 11 games in the 2011 season.
Kearse, who played his college ball at the University of Washington, was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2012.
