SAN DIEGO -- Nearly 8,500 San Diego-area homes were without power as two separate power outages hit San Diego County Sunday.
The first outage occurred about 12:20 p.m. west of Alpine near Interstate 8 and affected the communities of Lakeside, Blossom Valley, El Monte, Lakeview, Winter Gardens and Bostonia, according to the San Diego Gas & Electric Co. website.
The outage may have been cause by a traffic crash on Winter Gardens Boulevard and Wintercrest Drive in Lakeside, where a black SUV hit a transformer, a San Diego Sheriff's dispatcher said.
The crash was reported by the California Highway Patrol at 12:18 p.m., just before the power outage was reported.
There were a total of 3,429 East County homes without power. About 3,000 of the homes were expected to regain power by 3:20 p.m. and about 350 by 4 p.m., according to the company's website.
An apparently-unrelated power outage occurred in San Diego at 1:02 p.m. and affected 4,843 homes around the City Heights and Chollas Creek neighborhoods, according to the SDG&E website.
That outage was suspected to be cause by problems in the underground electrical system and was expected to be restored by 2:05 p.m., SDG&E said on its website.
