LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- A man who was arrested at LAX with an array of weapons and sex paraphernalia in his luggage was in court for an arraignment on Friday.
Yongda Huang Harris, 28, was deemed a flight risk and will remain in custody.
A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Oct. 23.
Harris was referred for secondary inspection after arriving on a flight from Japan when customers officers noticed he was wearing what looked like a bulletproof vest and flame retardant pants.
It turned out the bulletproof-style vest was in fact a Chinese-made knockoff and not an actual ballistic vest, investigators said.
According to Homeland Security, Harris' luggage contained a pyrotechnic smoke grenade, three leather-coated billy clubs, a collapsible baton, various knives and a hatchet.
He also had a full-face respirator, body bags, a biohazard suit, handcuffs, duct tape, leg irons, oven mitts and cooking tongs.
On Harris' laptop, investigators found Japanese fantasy rape writings, pornography and a copy of the "Poor Man's James Bond," ABC News reported.
It's a popular text among dissidents and anarchists with extensive information on the use of terror tactics, ABC said.
Harris had flown from China to Korea to Japan before landing in Los Angeles, and was then bound his home in Boston.
Officials say Harris has been working as an English teacher in China. He's a naturalized U.S. citizen who was formerly a Chinese national.
The FBI has notified its legal attaches in both China and Japan of the troubling materials they found with Harris, the pornographic pictures and writings and the concerns given his close proximity to children in his teaching role.
Harris is now charged in a criminal complaint with one count of transporting hazardous materials. The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to five years in prison.
