OCALA, Fla. -- Authorities in Florida are trying to identify a newborn baby girl who was found in a box on the side of a road.
The baby was found by a passerby, covered in ants Saturday afternoon.
She was inside a box near a street corner in Ocala and weighed 7 pounds, 9 ounces, according to investigators.
Investigators say the infant was hungry and crying and at the time was estimated to be between three days and a week old.
She is now said to be in good health but has several ant bites.
Ocala police released a photo of the baby Monday, hoping that someone who recognizes the child comes forward.
The Department of Children and Families is keeping the infant in Munroe Regional Medical Center.
Anyone with information about the child, or her parents is asked to call police.
Authorities say it is legal to drop a newborn off at safe havens like fire stations and hospitals under the safe haven law.
