For What It's Worth: January 30th

For What it’s Worth---on January 30 -- Does Wichita State deserve a mulligan, or does their alleged performance against Indiana State shed some unflattering light on their deficiencies?

Yikes---

I’m not even sure you can go back to Gregg Marshall’s first year at Wichita State and find a worse performance. That sounds like I’m taking something away from Indiana State and I’m not, the Sycamores had a great plan and they executed it with confidence. The Sycamores forced the Shockers to defend deep into the shot clock and then they would attack the basket.

For most of the game, Wichita State couldn’t stop them from scoring at the rim. On defense they switched looks a lot, but generally stayed in a bunched up 2-3 zone that took away WSU’s inside game. Indiana State was essentially inviting the three-point shot, which the Shockers obliged by hoisting a season high 28 tries.

What allowed ISU to do this is the size they have—while they did give up 19 offensive rebounds---they were able to deal with the Shocker presence down low. Consider that WSU shot just 7-31 from inside the three point line, it shows you how strongly everything was contested. Indiana State deserved to win.

Live and learn---

It’ll be interesting to see which way this sends the Shockers. Do they buck up and fight in a place that’s tough to win in regardless the circumstances, or do they go to Northern Iowa suddenly vulnerable? We’ll find out on Saturday afternoon.

A-Fraud---

Really? Alex Rodriguez admitted to the use of performance enhancing drugs from 1991-1993, but now is reported to have been using them as recently as last season. A-Rod was dealing injuries a lot last year, who knows; maybe he was allegedly acquiring human growth hormone to combat the effects of a bad hip.

Maybe he was using solely for the recuperative powers of the drug…or maybe he’s just an arrogant fool. Alex Rodriguez has long since used up any good will he might have had once with fans. Fans that are sick of PED’s in their sport, but even sicker of guys who don’t learn their lesson. What’s the old saying? Fool me once---shame on you, fool me twice---shame on me.

The greatest---

With the exception of Muhammad Ali, if you have to proclaim yourself the greatest—chances are that you aren’t. Randy Moss calls himself the best ever, which I’m sure, came as a surprise to Jerry Rice and his Super Bowl rings. Moss may have been the most dynamic downfield threat in NFL history and he’s in the discussion for being right behind Rice—who’s in a club of his own.

Did you know…

…that you can place a bet on whether or not Beyonce will show cleavage during her first song at halftime of the Super Bowl? What’s next? A wager on how long the National Anthem will last or whether the Harbaugh brothers will both be wearing hats? Why stop there? How about placing a few bucks on what color Gatorade will be dumped on the winning coach? Wait a minute---you mean you can? By the way, yes—2:05---yes on the hats---lime green.
