The city will rotate through the zones weekly. Once the rotation is finished, the city will start over until all leaves are removed. Residents are asked to rake their leaves close to the curb, and park away from the piles during their zone's removal week.

Elkhart County

The county has no leaf pickup service. However, residents can dump their leaves at the Elkhart County Landfill, 59530 C.R. 7, for free through the end of November. Leaves cannot contain any yard waste. Bagged leaves will have to be opened before they are accepted. Landfill hours are:  7 a.m. - 4:45 p.m., Monday -Friday. Saturday hours are 9 a.m.-11:45 a.m.

Goshen

Leaf removal via Leaf-vacs begins the week of October 20. The city requests that all leaves be raked to the curb, free of brush and away from storm drains. No need to call for a scheduled pickup.

Because of recent snows, all leaf piles should be reraked and pushed to the curb for easier removal by city work crews.

Middlebury

Residents should rake their leaves in piles on the curb — keeping leaves out of the street. Town crews will remove the piles as they see them. Do not call the town offices to schedule pickup times.

UPDATE:  12/08/08  ReLeaf Program Suspended
With over 50,000 cubic yards of loose leaves collected so far (out of approximately 60,000 cubic yards annually) and due to the current weather conditions, the City of South Bend is suspending the automatic loose leaf pickup for the winter.  Weather permitting the Division of Streets will continue loose leaf pickup, on a call-in basis only for approximately one more week.

Residents who have raked their leaves to the curb line – not into the street. Call Streets at 235-9244 to schedule a pickup through Thursday, Dec. 18. The most difficult challenge for crews at this time, is finding the leaf piles. The city recommends that residents clear snow off the leaf piles and re-rake them into wind rows (tall, narrow rows) so that drivers can easily identify them for pickup.

Over the last five years, November snowfall has totaled between .2” and 6”.  This year, 16.2” fell in November, with another 7.5” the first week of December.  The wind, snow, ice, and cold temperatures are reducing operational effectiveness of leaf collection by clogging up and sometimes causing damage to the equipment.  This limits resources that can be used for snow plowing and clearance. The Division of Streets will begin removing leaf boxes from their trucks, allowing for more efficient plowing and salting.

Unfortunately, some leaves have ended up in the streets rather than at the curbside.  As a result, these leaves are frozen and create a danger for all vehicles, including snow plows.  Residents are asked to please help by removing any leaves in the street and bagging them for pickup.  South Bend will continue to collect bagged leaves at curbside on a call-in basis throughout the winter.  Please call the Bureau of Solid Waste at 277-8515 to schedule a pickup.

Operation ReLeaf will resume in the spring.

Warsaw

Warsaw Department of Public Works will dispatch leaf crews on Oct. 20. Additional trucks and crews will be added as needed with the full crew beginning Nov. 3. Leaf piles must be free from grass, sticks, brush and trash. Leaves should be placed on the curb line, not in the street. Leaves in the alley will be picked up at the end of the leaf season in late November or early December.
