A 20-year-old man was arrested after a crash that killed a 19-year-old woman – a passenger in his vehicle police have now identified as Carley Jean Hartman of the Berrien Springs area.

This happened just before 2 a.m. near the intersection of Pucker Street and Smith Road in the township of Berrien. The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department says their deputies responded after a 1978 Ford pickup lost control and hit a tree.

The deputies found Hartman dead. They say she was a passenger in the truck.

The driver was found wandering around the area and had visible injuries, say police. He was placed under arrest and taken to Lakeland Hospital to be treated for those non-life threatening injuries.

The sheriff’s office is seeking charges through the Berrien County Prosecutor’s Office – Operating a Vehicle under the Influence of Intoxicants Causing Death.

Police are withholding the driver's name until he is formally charged.

They say alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
