BMV to Move License Branch Downtown after Criticism of Earlier Plan

By Beth Boehne

(SBT24/7News) South Bend’s license branch is moving downtown.

The new branch, scheduled to open in spring 2008, will be built on a lot at 623 S. St. Joseph Street. Bureau of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Ron Stiver announced the move during a visit to the area Thursday morning.

The decision comes months after west side residents and local politicians blasted earlier BMV plans to move the branch from its current location at 4646 W. Western Ave. to a site about 6½ miles away on the city’s northwest side.

After hearing those concerns, Stiver said, the BMV worked with local officials to find a downtown site.
