Property Tax Bills on Their Way in St. Joseph County

By WSBT News1

(WSBT) The St. Joseph County Treasurer is sending out property tax bills. That means many St. Joseph County homeowners may get a big shock in their mailbox this week.

Treasurer Sean Coleman tells WSBT most residents will see a property tax increase this year at around the same rate other Indiana residents are seeing. Most areas are seeing about a 24 percent increase this year.

The treasurer's office has been busy printing the bills since last week. This year's property tax bills are coming late because of errors in the assessment.

Some local homes were under-assessed, giving them a negative value, and it took time for state officials to clear up the confusion. Once that happened, the property tax rate was sent in mid-September and the treasurer could get to work in determining how much money everyone owes.

There are some people who'll still be waiting for their bill. Six tax units that border LaPorte County will not receive bills because their rates have not been released. They include Olive Township, New Carlisle, Liberty Township, North Liberty, Lincoln Township
and Walkerton.
