(WSBT) The final chapter in the criminal trial involving the death of a South Bend police officer is expected to come to a close today. The getaway driver in the case will learn his punishment for his role in the death of Corporal Scott Severns.

Mijell Redding's sentencing was delayed once earlier this year. A judge delayed the sentencing so he would be available to testify against Severn's shooter, Jeff Finley.

Redding drove the getaway car in the murder of Corporal Scott Severns in April of 2006. He pleaded guilty to the attempted robbery earlier this year.

Last week, a judge sentenced Finley to 55 years for Severns' murder. Finley got another 10 years for attempted robbery.

Police say the two teens attempted to rob Severns and his girlfriend on Clover Street near the IUSB campus. Severns was off duty. Investigators say he was shot three times while protecting the woman from gunfire. He was able to return fire, wounding Jeff Finley, but Severns died in the hospital two days later.

Mijell Redding could face 50 years in prison when he's sentenced. Last week there was a public outcry when Severn's shooter, Jeff Finley, was sentenced to a total of 65 years in prison. Some didn't feel his punishment was harsh enough and that he should have gotten life in prison. With good behavior Finley could be released in 30 years. A judge decided on the lesser sentence because of Finley's age and the fact that he didn't have a prior criminal record.
