(WSBT) Police in LaPorte are sending out a warning — watch out for phone scams.

Ruth Moyer says she got three calls in the last week.

She called police during one of the phone scams, using her phone's three-way capabilities.

Police recorded the call.

"How much money?" Moyer asked the caller.

"Leverage grant of $5,000, which you never have to pay back," the caller said. "It's non-refundable and non-taxable. And this money will be credited into your bank account by tomorrow after 3 p.m., ma'am. You just have to confirm your bank account number ma'am."

The police officer then got on the phone.

The caller told him he was with the United States government, but would not cooperate.

It's an important reminder never to give your personal information over the phone.
