(WSBT) Many people in Kosciusko County were lucky to get out of their homes during Thursday night’s storms. They took shelter during the storms only to find a lot of damage in the storm's aftermath.

People were allowed back in their homes Friday morning to assess the damage. Others lost their homes completely.

"We're grabbing a hold of his hand because the glass started shattering,” Lawanda Borkholder told WSBT News.

Huddling in the back bedroom and holding each other tight, it's one of the few moments Lawanda and her husband remember before the world turned upside down.

"It felt like it was coming this way back towards us,” she said.

After Lawanda got her husband up they walked into the hallway got dressed and put their shoes on — a brief moment in time that Lawanda says saved their lives.

"If we would have come through here, we probably would have got, with all the glass, injured very badly or even killed,” she said.

Just next door Bill Angler and his wife can't believe they too made it out alive.

"I just grabbed her and we got on the floor and the roof came in on top of us,” Angler explained. “We had a chair that held the roof up. We were able to get out from underneath of it."

Shattered glass, two walls, and mounds of debris are all that's left of the Borkholders' 1500 square foot home.

"This was our like a little bit of a dining room, living room. This was all open,” Lawanda said.

Despite the devastation, they still consider themselves blessed.

"I'm very lucky,” Nathan Borkholder said. “And we’ve got to thank the Lord for it.”

"I don't care about the material things,” Lawanda said. “All I'm thankful for is my husband and I made it out alive."
