(WSBT) The damage from the tornado is expected to run into the millions for homeowners and businesses in Nappanee. Many hope their insurance will get them through this. But figuring out exactly what it will pay for can sometimes be a mystery.

Lotus Adams was one of many hit hard by the tornado. He owns two homes that were severely damaged in the storm.

He has spent the last couple of days cleaning up, but is still figuring out how his insurance will factor into all of this.

"I think I am covered, but I don't know how much. If you are not around this, you have no idea what the cost can be,” he told WSBT News. “So we are just kind of in the dark, hoping for the best."

Many in Nappanee are in similar straights.

John Kissling, with the Indiana Department of Insurance, was in town Friday to answer questions about just that.

“We are here to help people any way possible,” Kissling said. “We want to answer questions concerning insurance coverage, questions they may have concerning any issue with respect to the collection of their claim for damages."

For homeowners as well as businesses that have never gone through anything like this before, solving and resolving insurance questions can be bewildering.

"It’s devastating to go through this, and of course insurance is always a mystery to a lot of people… what's covered, what's not and so on,” said Kissling. “That’s what we're here to help them with."

“I had two sheds here, they went down. I have two houses right here together, both of them need a new roof, windows, siding,” Adams said. “So we've got an awful lot to do."
