Property Tax Rebates on the Way for Some Homeowners

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) Property tax relief is on the way for some Hoosier homeowners.

Those who filed for 2007 homestead exemptions in time will get a rebate.

In our area, St. Joseph County will receive the largest rebate amount, with more than $16 million from the state.

The county auditor will divide up the money by township. That will determine how much each homeowner would receive. Some stand to receive hundreds of dollars.

The money has to be distributed by January. Any unused money will go back to the state auditor's office.

Marion and Lake Counties got the largest rebates. Lake is getting more than $40 million; Marion County will get more than $51 million.
