South Bend Mayoral Candidates Focus On Getting Voters Out On Election Day

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) From TV and radio ads, to heated exchanges, the race for South Bend mayor has been up close and — at times — personal.

“It's a little humbling to learn everything you've done wrong according to your opponent," said Mayor Steve Luecke.

Democrat Mayor Steve Luecke — already the city's longest serving mayor — ran on what he called progress: new jobs and retail on the south side, plans for more to the northwest, and a reduction in crime.

But Republican challenger Juan Manigault disputed that record, insisting crime is still a problem, and real progress won't come without change.

And Tuesday, after months of running, both candidates are now waiting, thanking voters for voting, and hoping Election Day's blustery weather doesn't hurt their chances at the finish line.

“You always worry that bad weather will keep people home, but I think we've got some really motivated voters this year. I think people are going to get to the polls. It's been a race people have paid attention to so I'm encouraged,” said Luecke.

“I'm not worried about the weather. The people who want to vote are going to come out and do their duty and that's what's important," said Manigault.

And to make sure they got people to get out and vote, volunteers and even the candidates spent time on the phone Tuesday personally calling their party faithful.
