(WSBT) The results are all in for Campaign '07, but in some cases, the races are just too close to call. That includes the race for mayor in Benton Harbor.

Mayor Wilce Cooke held off challenger James Atterberry by just six votes: Cooke had 645 votes, Atterberry 639. The margin falls well within the standard for a recount in Michigan.

Atterberry told WSBT News his campaign will ask for a recount when the election is officially certified, which should happen sometime Thursday. Both men say they're surprised by the outcome.

“Just wouldn't be able to figure that out in a million years,” Atterberry said. “I didn't think we would come in that close.”

“I was totally surprised by the outcome of the election,” Mayor Wilce Cook said. “I thought I would have won more handily than I did, but I only won by six votes.”

Mayor Wilce Cooke says the city's 3rd Ward pushed him over the top. He's confident a recount will go his way.

“If I was behind, I would probably ask for a recount too,” Mayor Cooke said. “I don't think it's going to change anything. We have a good city clerk, she counted the ballots. She had everything in order, they're locked.”

Atterberry and his supporters want to make sure there were no issues with the election. He said whoever becomes mayor will have to deal with a divided city.

“If the mayor goes in, he really didn't win,” Atterberry said. “He could win technically, but he still has half the side, the other way and the same would be for me. That's unfortunate, because whoever goes in to be mayor has a big job to do. “

The Berrien County Board of Election Canvassers meets Thursday in St. Joseph. They will review the ballots and then certify the election. Atterberry's camp would then have until next week to file for a recount.
