(WSBT) With a deadline rapidly approaching, it looks like the Faith Mission in Elkhart just might make it. They're moving into a new home, and that will mean a happy Thanksgiving for hundreds of people.

"This is the hub of a lot of things that we do,” explained Ross Swihart of Faith Mission.

Work is going smoothly on the new kitchen and dining area for Faith Mission, located off of Benham Avenue.

The kitchen and dining area is in the new general services building for the mission that will also house a chapel, offices and laundry facilities.

“This is our single biggest program that we do, is food service,” Swihart told WSBT News. “That's where everything starts because when a person becomes homeless you know one of the first things is they are hungry."

The mission recently received some help for the project from The Bashor Home and a former restaurant in Goshen. Both donated kitchen equipment that the shelter can use.

“The timing of some of the big pieces of kitchen equipment as far as the range hood and stoves and some other things really came together at the right time,” Swihart said.

When completed they'll be able to serve 192 people at one time in the dining area. That compares with 66 at the current location on South Main.

The Faith Mission is still in the process of raising funds to finish renovating the building that previously housed the RV Museum and Hall of Fame.

“To finish out this project in this building that we're in, we're looking at around $400,000 that we need currently,” said Faith Mission’s Mark Perez. “So we have a nice group of volunteers that are out helping us raise that money. But we can always use that help."

The Faith Mission needs to be out of its old place by the end of November. The Elkhart Redevelopment Commission has bought the property.

The Mission has already completed work on a new men's dormitory and plans to build a new facility to house women and children.
