Goshen Community Responds After Fire Destroys Family Grocery Store

(SBT24/7News) Several government officials, business owners and non-profit organization representatives Wednesday morning met with Alfredo Ponce, co-owner of the San Marcos Taqueria and Grocery store that caught fire last week.

Although the building is structurally sound, major renovation will be required following the fire that occurred about 5 a.m. on Nov. 9. Spoiling meat and other food also pose an immediate health hazard, officials said in a news release.

A group of volunteers will begin the cleanup process beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday with donated trash bins, temporary lighting and cleanup materials. Meanwhile, the store’s owners are trying to figure out how to rebuild, as the building and its contents were not insured and the store was their main source of income, officials said.

Downtown Goshen Inc. has established a fund to accept donations to help with the rebuilding effort.

The Goshen fire and police departments are still investigating the cause of the fire.

Additional volunteers are still needed for cleanup.
