(WSBT) While many groups are raising awareness this week about homelessness, others are trying to get smokers to kick the habit.

It's the annual Great American Smokeout. They're asking people not to smoke for 24 hours and develop a plan to quit.

Experts say those who kick the habit can see positive results within five minutes of their last cigarettes.

“It's very difficult to quit. My longest time has been 13 months. But I've talked to people who've been smoke-free for years and they still fall into that trap of thinking they can smoke just one cigarette. Don't do it,” said Luann Warner, who is trying to quit smoking.

For help to quit smoking, call the American Cancer Society.

You can also take free support classes at St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.
