NIPSCO to weatherize homes of low-income families

By Tiffany Griffin

(SBT24/7News) The Northern Indiana Public Service Co. has kicked off a new program to weatherize the homes of low-income natural gas customers who own their homes.

If they qualify, the customers wouldn’t pay for the work.

But the program will help only a limited number of homes. So, it’s first come, first served by calling (800) 721-7385 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday or by going to the Web site www.nipsco.com and clicking on the link near the top of the page.

The program reaches those who earn too much to qualify for other weatherization programs. Your income must be between 150 percent and 200 percent of the federal poverty level. That’s $15,315 to $20,420 for a one-person household.

It requires that you’ve lived in your home for at least 12 months.

NIPSCO’s Home Energy Solutions program will start off with an assessment of your home. Improvements to homes could include replacing inefficient appliances, adding insulation and/or air sealant and installing devices like water-saving shower heads.

The work will be done by agencies of the Indiana Community Action Association. That is REAL Services in St. Joseph, Elkhart, Fulton, Marshall and Kosciusko counties.
