(SBT24/7News) The U.S. Department of Transportation has run out the clock on any possible time zone switch for St. Joseph County.

A request by the county commissioners for an extension of the period for filing a petition to move St. Joseph County into the Central time zone has been denied by the DOT.

"I’m extremely disappointed," said County Commissioner President Steve Ross, D-2nd. "At a minimum, they should have given us a fair hearing."

Instead of a hearing, the commissioners got a letter from Judith Kaleta, the DOT’s senior counsel for dispute resolution.

The letter was in response to a letter sent by Ross and Commissioner Robert Kovach, D-3rd, asking for the time extension to allow a "possible" petition to move the county into the Central time zone.

The extension request was necessary because a DOT filing deadline established in a case involving several southwestern Indiana counties had expired.

A DOT ruling in January 2006 left St. Joseph in the Eastern time zone, ending a long debate as well as the possibility that St. Joseph and Elkhart counties could be in different time zones.

In the letter, Kaleta told the commissioners that while the DOT gives "substantial consideration to local elected officials," the DOT will "not consider any petitions for a time zone change from any elected officials in Indiana until Nov. 4, 2008."

Ross said his intent now is to try again next year, based on his belief in the economic benefits to the county of being in a time zone with Chicago instead of with the East Coast.

Indiana is 100 percent geographically in the central time zone. Ohio, Michigan, and Kentucky are part in Eastern and part in Central. Hey mom... the other kids jumped off the bridge. Yes another shining example of why Ind. will never be in the lea

Any county that borders another time zone will have issues. EST is the right zone for SJC. For cryin out load, the sun goes down here at about 505pm at this time of year. If we were on central that would be 405pm.Make sense?Move it u don't like it!!

Nope we belong on Eastern time cause we are aligned with Michigan and Ohio for that part of the country. What do you want? Michigan people not happy with the time switch? Must be madly insane to want Central!!

Daniels is losing my vote due to this and the Toll Rd lease. Here I had hoped that instead of being off with work half the year,it would be on all year and then Daniels has to step in and screw things up ALL year long. Can't vote him out fast enough!

Glad to see that the Hoosier State is living up to its name. Even cavemen probably knew that NOON is when the sun is straight up in the sky. Now we have noon when the sun is in the East. Only in Indiana would that make sense.

SJC County Commissioner President Steve Ross has no solutions but loves to stir the pot. I say out with them all. We need less govt not more and these folks do not tackle real issues with substance instead emotional issues. Steve Ross should quit!!!

I hope I get a chance to vote against Ross and/or Kovatch in the next election. That is, if I know what time to go to the polls. Those two will have me so confused I may not make it in time. Keep them in line, Mark Dobson.

economic benefits? What about a mayor bringing some big jobs to the area first. Or are we talking about $7.00/hr retail jobs? SB/SJC has missed out on every significant job/business landing in the state for years. Four more to go!

Come on St. Joe County, we already have 6 counties that went Central that are now being switched back to Eastern Time does that tell you something about CST. Keep us at EST please.

Why do we keep pushing this? We are bordered by all EST except except 1. If it is such a problem with people in LaPorte then change them to EST. I think all of Indiana should be on one time zone anyway. Not County by County.

Try living in New Carlisle - where you live in EST but your kids go to school 4 miles away in CST! Now, instead of having to convert time 1/2 the yr we are forced to do it all yr long. Try making appointments using Town Time or School time.

Why do people keep pushing this? We are bordered mostly by EST, and time zone lines run vertical, so we should stay on EST. Case closed.
