(SBT24/7News) Workers are scheduled to begin installation on Friday of new turf in Notre Dame Stadium.

All the grass on the playing field was removed earlier this week. That turf had been in use for five playing seasons.

The new sod comes from a Colorado turf farm, the same supplier that recently installed a new grass field at Wrigley Field in Chicago.

Overseeing installation of the new Fighting Irish field is George Toma, an authority on grass athletic fields. He has overseen grass installation and preparations for all NFL Super Bowls.

"If I had my druthers, we would put FieldTurf in," Notre Dame head football coach Charlie Weis said. "This is Notre Dame, that’s not happening. I think it will make our game field significantly better for next year."

The work is expected to be complete next week. The new field will be ready for use by the Irish during spring football drills in April 2008.
