(SBT24/7News) School-bus safety will be in the spotlight beginning Monday, as officers across Elkhart County begin working on a new initiative to end dangerous driving.

Using a grant available from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, officers will work in teams to ticket drivers disregarding school bus traffic laws.

One officer will ride the bus to observe traffic and radio a second officer, who will stop violators and write tickets.

“Poor driving in school zones and near school buses has become more of a problem lately, and we believe this effort will reinforce the need for safety on our roads — especially when children are present,” said Capt. Sean Holmes of the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

School bus drivers are just as guilty when it comes to "poor driving" as well. I've had a bus pull right out in front of me disregarding any of the traffic coming either way & then they stop to pick up or drop off a kid. That has happened twice.
