(WSBT) Marquette Primary School in South Bend was saved from the wrecking ball Monday night.

The Common Council voted 5-3 to designate the school as an historic landmark. The school corporation wanted to tear down the building to make room for a new school, but the Historic Preservation Commission argued the 80-year-old building is architecturally unique and deserved to be saved.

School officials say the decision will stall other projects.

"The bond is committed to new construction only and so when we say go back to ground zero we would have to go back all the way to the beginning which delays not only Marquette at that point, but would delay Monroe and the other projects as well," said South Bend School Superintendent Robert Zimmerman.

"We have endorsements from the state Department of Natural Resources and just recently from the National Trust itself. So the building does merit historic, architectural and cultural significance," said Timothy Klusczkinski of the Historic Preservation Commission.

Any renovations for Marquette will now have to go before the Historic Preservation Commission.
