Shots Fired During Chase After Niles Shop Robbed

By Tiffany Griffin

(SBT24/7News) Police are seeking two men early Thursday morning after a robbery in Niles that led to a chase across state lines.

Michigan State Police said the Lenny Mini Mart, a Marathon station on U.S. 12 near M-60 was robbed about 10:45 p.m.

When the suspects fled, a witness at the store followed them into St. Joseph County as far as the area of Brick Road and Laurel Creek Drive. But then, St. Joseph County officials said, the suspects fired shots at the witness and sped off.

Officers remained on the scene at 1:30 a.m. as the investigation continued. MSP said the clerk was pistol-whipped repeatedly and treated and released at Lakeland Hospital for minor injuries.

An undisclosed amount of money was taken during the armed robbery.

Authorities are looking for three suspects, including two black males believed to be fleeing in a black or dark blue, full-sized Ford Bronco with a tan top. Witnesses said the SUV had an Indiana temporary tag on it.
