(SBT24/7News) Rumors that have been circulating Thursday morning about a lockdown taking place at Penn High School in the wake of a violence threat are not true, the spokeswoman for the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp. said.

"We have a lot of rumors that are flying around that are totally unfounded," Teresa Carroll said.

The rumors dealing with a possible shooting threat were sparked by graffiti found in a girls’ bathroom earlier this week, likely on Monday, Carroll said Thursday morning.

The writing said, "Kill all the (expletive)," Carroll said.

Rumors among students began to surface Wednesday and started to pick up steam, she said, after which staff had an informal meeting Wednesday night.

Officials have placed a message on the school Web site, which says, "We are encouraging parents to send their children to Penn High School today. The rumors about an incident are not based on facts.

"We have a strong school safety plan in place, and Penn administration and our school resource officer have investigated and they found no evidence to support the misinformation that has created fear about an incident today."

"We investigated as much as we could," Carroll said. "We have no idea who would have printed (the graffiti), but of course rumors started to spread about what had been said, and it’s gotten out of hand."

It is not unusual to have graffiti in a high school bathroom, Carroll said. A large number of students have left school Thursday, Carroll said, but officials would not be having school Thursday if they felt students would be in danger, she said.

She said she wouldn’t know the total number of students who left school until the end of the day. At this point, there is no reason to be afraid of attending school Thursday or Friday, Carroll said.

"I think some people are genuinely afraid," Carroll said, "and I think others are students who do not wish to be at school today."

I am a student at Penn HS, and in my opinion, this is a serious matter. Others and myself have seen some students with "to kill" lists and have contemplated reporting these to the school. These threats are real, and they ARE scary.

I cannot believe that there was absolutely no communication with parents on this one. I heard it from my daughter and found nothing on the school website to ease my mind (9 p.m. Wednesday evening). We should have been told what u told ur staff!

Just remember Columbine High School and all the 'unfounded rumors' and 'signs' that lead to 35 kids being shot or killed. No thanks, PHM, I'll take this and any other threat seriously and we suggest you should begin doing the same.

Rumors in a high school? No way! If parents knew half of what their child said or did at school 90% of kids would be home schooled. You aren't expected to "get over" it but you do need to open your eyes and see what your kids are really doing.

Prior to the largest school shootings ever, students who were planning these atrocities were leaving signs and warnings of what they were about to do - website postings, journal writing, etc., serious behavioral changes. Signs everyone missed...

If the school thought we were in danger, they would have closed school for the day. This student obviously wasn't planning anything - if they were, they would have kept it to themselves.

I am currently a student at Penn High School. I think that this whole incident was just a bunch of drama. To scare students and staff. It happens almost every year.

Being a student at the school, I have seen a lot of weird people walk through those doors. I can understand why people were scared. The same thing happened last year and everybody made a big deal about it, and a month later we all forgot about it.

This is dumb. Things like this in the world. If people want to run away from it at school, does that mean they want to run away from the world? This person did it for attention and to stir things up.. GET OVER IT.BUT GOOD JOB FOR DOING WHAT YOU ALL D

I am a student a Penn High School and yesterday was pretty crazy for some students because one student would say one thing and it would get to another student and it would be a totally different story.PHM knows what they are doing

this is dump. People do things also in the bathrooms and write other things also. I know that this is bad put i think the person that did this just wanted to stir things up at our school. I think we shouldn't of let kids out. WE WENT WAY OVER BOARD!

Penn should have done a better job of telling all the students about this. They didn't even tell the school until that night on their website, or that morning at school. They should have told more students so they could decide to come or not.

Being a former student and employee of the PHM school corp and working at Penn itself I witnessed and heard so so many of these threats and you simply cannot ignore one of them for anything! I was obligated to report incidents to keep our people safe

How many times have threats been made at schools only to be ignored? If something had happened and I hadn't have let my son come home, I could never have lived with myself. Sorry, I'm not gonna "get over it" when it comes to the safety of my kids.

Just have your daughter go to school, nothing will happen. Get over it, there is grafiti all the time. The only reason students wouldn't go to school is to just plain not go for the sake of skipping out on class. The officials did everything right.

I have a senior at Penn HS and this is the first we have heard of this. Good Lord what if we had another Columbine HS? PHM Officials YOU SCREWED UP ON THIS ONE!
