Tornado, Fires Deplete Elkhart County Red Cross Funds

By Beth Boehne

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) — Elkhart County's American Red Cross chapter says several recent house fires following October's tornado in Nappanee have drained their funds for disaster relief.

Executive Director Linda Nelson says they have given about $4,500 to 28 residents displaced by six fires since last week.

The agency gave $35,000 to families affected by the Oct. 18 tornado in Nappanee.

Nelson fears that more house fires will deplete its funds. She says it's difficult to estimate how much money the agency has left, but says it might have to tap into other funds or cut programs.

The agency is encouraging people to donate cash for local disaster relief and to participate in a gift-giving program.
