Property taxes county-city building treasurer's office

(WSBT) It's a day local governments, schools, even the airport authority have been eagerly awaiting. St. Joseph County sent out millions of dollars Friday in money collected from property taxes. Many government agencies had to borrow to make ends meet.

Those units normally get revenue throughout the year, but the delay in property taxes meant they got much less money early in the year than in years past.

“It is frustrating for school corporations to have to worry about, 'Are you going to be able to meet your bills because you don't know when the money's coming'” explained Dr. Denise Feger, Associate Superintendent of the Penn-Harris-Madison School Corporation.

Now that money is here. The South Bend Schools received the most from the county, with $18.8 million. The City of South Bend received $3.5 million, Penn schools received $9.6 million and the City of Mishawaka was next with $5.2 million.

They will use the money to pay back the loans they took out earlier. The bottom line for taxpayers — all of the units that had to borrow will have to pay interest.

They don't know exactly how much money that would be, but for Penn schools and the City of South Bend, it totals in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.
