(WSBT) Pet lovers got together to enjoy some holiday cheer Sunday.

The Humane Society of Elkhart County hosted its annual Christmas open house Friday afternoon.

People met with the staff, got a tour of the shelter and visited with the animals that are up for adoption.

Pets also got a chance to sit on Santa's lap for a picture.

Organizers say Christmas is the perfect time of year for events like these.

"Everybody really gets in a festive mood around the holidays and we thought it really kind of is nice to be able to connect it with the Christmas season and kind of bring a lot of that excitement and everything into the shelter,” explained Executive Director Eric Durcinka.

About 200 people turned out for the open house.
