(WSBT) The St. Joseph County sheriff is in a standoff with some county leaders and it all has to do with his paycheck.

In August, county officials learned the sheriff was taking a commission on collecting tax warrants, adding about $57,000 to his $115,000 per year salary.

That's completely legal and not unheard of for county sheriffs.

But commissioners were still angry about it.

In Canarecci's first term, he had a contract that required him to give that money to the county budget, but the contract in his second term was never signed.

Through a spokesperson, the sheriff told our partners at The South Bend Tribune he's willing to negotiate a compromise, but not as long as county officials attack his integrity.

Now, the County Council delayed a vote to give the sheriff a pay raise next year.

“We delayed the ordinance at the request of the county commissioners to allow them more time to negotiate an agreement with the sheriff,” said Council President Rafael Morton.
