Car theft suspects flee police; stop sticks lead to arrest in Plymouth

By Beth Boehne

(SBT24/7News) Authorities took three people into custody around 1:30 p.m. Monday after two of the three led police on a two-county chase and around a major accident outside Plymouth.

Fulton County Sheriff Walker Conley said one of his deputies had stopped the vehicle near U.S. 31 in Fulton County and, when a check was done on the vehicle, it came back as reported missing.

The deputy, Conley said, took the male driver into custody, handcuffing him. A 17-year-old male then allegedly slid into the driver’s seat, and took off northbound on U.S. 31 with a female passenger.

Conley said he was still piecing together the incident Monday afternoon, but said the pursuit took the suspects toward a major accident on U.S. 31 just south of Plymouth, with the driver of the stolen vehicle cutting through Argos along with diverted trucks and other drivers.

The driver then got back on U.S. 31 at Michigan Road.

Conley said authorities — including Marshall County, Plymouth and Argos police — were able to place stop sticks near the U.S. 31 junction with U.S. 30 on Plymouth’s northeast side.

The stop sticks pierced the tires, causing the vehicle to come to a stop and allowed police to take the 17-year-old male driver and the female passenger into custody without incident. Conley said officers believe the pair were headed back to an unknown location in South Bend.

Additional details will be forthcoming, the sheriff said.

I was right in front of this chase! I was driving on old 31 when suddenly the car was behind me swirving to try and get around me with backed up traffic coming the other way, I'm glad I was able to get out of the way, I could have been killed.
