Jury deliberating fate of man accused of killing South Bend teenager

Larry R. Mitchell

By Beth Boehne

(WSBT) A jury is now deciding the fate of a man on trial for killing a South Bend teenager.

Larry Mitchell faces charges for the murder of 16-year-old Ja-Vonda Tharbs.

Three inmates and one former inmate testified in court that Mitchell confessed to the shooting in jail.

Prosecutors claim Mitchell shot Tharbs three times while she was waiting at her sister's apartment for a ride to a prom after-party.

It appears gang-related.

Prosecutors say Mitchell intended to kill Tharbs' sister in retaliation for another earlier shooting.

"It brings it back, but it gives me some clarity," said Yvonne Fountain, Ja-Vonda's mother. "Even though somebody said somebody did it, I've got proof, evidence, and things showing up that I need to know about."

If convicted Mitchell could face up to 65 years in prison.
