Two Elkhart teens injured in near-miss with deer

By Beth Boehne

ELKHART COUNTY — Two Elkhart teens were injured Friday night when the car they were driving crashed into a tree, according to a police report.

Kayla Ellis, 16, was driving southbound on County Road 101 just north of County Road 6 about 10:43 p.m. Friday night when a deer ran into the road. Ellis swerved to avoid the deer, slid off the road and hit a tree. The car was totaled.

Ellis reported pain in her hips and back, and passenger Erin Smith, 14, had pain in the abdominal area, according to police. Both were transported to Elkhart General Hospital. Smith was treated and released and Ellis was listed in stable condition Saturday morning.
