SOUTH BEND -- If you live in South Bend, there's a chance you got a knock on your door Monday night. Clay High School students drove around the city collecting canned food. It's was the final night of their annual food drive.

It was a mad dash from door to door.

"We were really hectic, 24/7 today," said Mairaj Uddin, Clay High School student council member.

Students were trying to collect more than 192,000 cans of food during one of the largest food drives in the country.

"There's always going to be competition," said Uddin.

The students say it's all for local churches and food pantries, which brings out the best in all of them.

"Even the other kids who usually aren't involved or parents and teachers and stuff are actually really, really into it," said Uddin.

"It's awesome. It's a great feeling knowing you can help so many people around South Bend. A lot of these agencies wouldn't be able to operate without us," said Christina Hamma, Clay High School's student body vice president.

As students come back with sacks and even carts full of canned food, there was a lot of sorting and stacking to be done.

"It's crazy, chaos," said Hamma.

But boxes were filling and each can got them closer to their goal.

"I'm not sure if we can, but no matter what, we are still trying hard," said Hamma.

As of Monday morning, they had collected 78,000 cans.

If you want to donate, it isn't too late. Cans of food can be delivered to the high school Tuesday morning before it's taken to local food banks.
