Fire destroys Buchanan clinic

By Tiffany Griffin

BUCHANAN — The owner of a chiropractic clinic that was destroyed Tuesday in an early morning fire plans to rebuild.

Chiropractor James Thompson said he is rescheduling patients from the burned-out Buchanan clinic to his office in Niles off Grant Street.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the Thompson Family Chiropractic and Wellness Center, 4820 Niles-Buchanan Road, about 2:20 a.m.

"The fire was (escaping) through the roof when the first truck got on the scene," said Tim Jesswein, Buchanan Township fire chief.

About two dozen firefighters from a handful of agencies — Berrien Springs, Niles, Galien, and Bertrand — battled the blaze for nearly an hour, he said.

"It’s devastating," Thompson said, adding that the Buchanan business has been open for about 20 years.

Employees of a restoration business were at the one-story building at noon Tuesday, boarding up windows.

Jesswein said authorities have not determined what caused the fire.

The southern end of the building, where an X-ray machine was located, sustained the most damage while the northern entrance section was still standing.

Tami Paquette, owner of Petals and Blooms gift shop, a few yards west of the chiropractic clinic, said she was glad no one was injured.

"I feel bad for them," she said referring to James Thompson and his wife, Beverly.

"They work unGodly hours," she said.

Beverly Thompson told Paquette they left the business at 7:30 p.m. Monday and "never thought there would be a fire" in the morning.
