SOUTH BEND — Four students remain at the Juvenile Justice Center after a loaded gun made its way inside the Greene Intermediate Center Wednesday. They're being held on preliminary charges of gun possession and criminal recklessness.

Officials say the 11 year-old was responsible for bringing the loaded 9 mm handgun on the bus.

Investigators also say the student obtained the gun from home, however they do not know who the gun belongs to.

Police questioned five students ranging in age from 11 to 14 years old.

Police say all of them handled the gun at some point on the bus. Hours after the gun was located, parents still feared for their children's safety.

"Especially with everything that's happened you know with Columbine and the mall shootings and things like that. Naturally a parent should be concerned,” said Kim Keen.

Sara Zolman agreed.

"It's disheartening. It's very worrisome that there'd be a gun brought into a middle school here in South Bend” said Zolman.

The four students still being held at the Juvenile Justice Center will be in court tomorrow for a detention hearing.

A judge will decide whether to release them to their parents or keep them at the Juvenile Justice Center.

Initially five students were being held there. But Thursday police said one of them has been released to a parent, however they are not saying why.
