BURNS HARBOR, Ind. — A freight train derailed in northwestern Indiana, briefly delaying commuter trains in the area Friday morning, including in South Bend.

Norfolk Southern spokesman Rudy Husband says an engine and 10 cars derailed Friday morning. No injuries were reported and no hazardous materials were involved.

The Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District says South Shore passenger trains again were moving through the area, after being stopped briefly by the derailment, which occurred between 6 and 7 a.m.

"(The South Shore commuter rail service) was impacted roughly 20 minutes," said John Parsons, spokesman of the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.

The crash occurred on a parallel track operated by the Norfolk Southern Railroad near U.S. 12 and Indiana 149 near Burns Harbor, about 10 miles east of Gary. The train was westbound from Secaucus, N.J., to Chicago.

Parsons said the 8:55 a.m. South Shore train out of South Bend’s Regional Airport, to Chicago, was delayed 20 minutes until emergency workers gave the rail line clearance to travel.

He said rush hour train service that was impacted the most occurred between Michigan City and Gary Friday morning.
