Homeowners near Baugo Creek prepare for flooding

ELKHART COUNTY — Preparations have begun for the big thaw headed our way. Elkhart County officials are already warning that melting snow combined with rainfall could lead to flooding.

Some homeowners aren't taking any chances.

People in the Baugo Creek area are well-acquainted with flooding. They say every time there's a big rain, the creek rises and causes flooding. So they're getting the sandbags and pumps ready just in case.

“It's beautiful here,” homeowner Gary Iwaniuk told WSBT News. “There's nothing but woods back here. There’s all kinds of animals — owls, deer.”

But the beautiful creek can turn ugly in a hurry for homeowners in the Creekwood subdivision.

“It'll be right where we're standing, in the water, and once it starts coming it’ll be right to the bottom of my deck, guaranteed, within 45 minutes,” Iwaniuk said.

Elkhart County Emergency Management Director Jennifer Tobey says homeowners should get ready now for any potential flooding.

“They should prepare for the worst,” she said. “If they've had flooding before, there's evidence we could have flooding again. So they need to put some sandbags up or do whatever they need to do to keep the water out of their homes.”

The homeowners here have already seen flooding in the past few months, and if that wasn't enough, their taxes increased.

They want the state to dredge the creek again. But until that happens, they just have to deal with the flooding.

“I've got my pumps ready, my hoses ready, because I told the wife — we just got back from vacation — it's coming,” Iwaniuk said.

Homeowners can pick up sandbags Saturday afternoon at the Six Span Bridge in Elkhart. There's also sand and bags there now if homeowners want to fill them themselves.

We live in a flood prone area and it has been a long time that we have heard what the river levels are. We too have learned from experience. We have had water in our house and have had to replace carpet, flooring etc. Years back we would get early warnings about the levels but, not any more. It would help all of us in these areas. I know that if the flood stage is at 13' in Goshen we will have it in our house.

I live by in a subdivision by the concord fire station off of cr 18 in dunlap. Yes we will be flooding. It seems to me the news wont care untill they want a story when we are waist deep in water in our house. Yes we have known of the risk for some time now but NO thanks to the news stations . We only know becuase of expeiriance. my house is one that usually gets hit hard and I can tell you they wont get me on the news then just so they can profit from my loss. I am verry disapointed in them.

I AM AGGRING WITH CATRINA WITH HER LAST POST SHE PUT. I WAS OUT AND ABOUT TODAY GOING TO COUNTY TO COUNTY(FRIM LAPORTE TO WINAMAC AND EAST TO ELKART AND DOWN TO WARSAW) AND EVERWHERE INBETWEEN AND FOUND THAT 99% OF THE RIVERS THAT I SEEN (SOME OF THEM WHERE THE SAME RIVER THOUGH) WERE FLOODING OR LESS THAN A HALF INCH AWAY FROM FLOODING. THINK GOD WE HAVE A FLOOD WATCH (FOR NOW) THAT ON MONDAY SOMETIME WOULD TURN INTO A FLOOD WARNING. WHAT STREET DO YOU LIVE ON THERE CATRINA

I agree I am on the Elkhart river and we too are an inch away from flooding. I havent heard them once mention any of our rivers. Also why no flood warnings?

SO THE ONLY THING THAT THE NEWS REPORTERS CAN COVER IS FOR POSSIBLE FLOODING AT THE BAUGO CREEK?? THERE ARE OTHER rivers THAT ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN A CREEK. THE TIPPY RIVER IS ALREADY STARTING TO FLOOD AND THE YELLOW RIVER IN PLYMOUTH IS APPROX. 2 INCHES SHY OF OVERFLOWING ITS BANKS. I'M NOT TRYING TO MAKE ANYBODY FELL BAD BUT I'M JUST MAKING A POINT HERE.
