MISHAWAKA — A retention pond behind Autumn Lakes Apartments in Mishawaka overflowed, sending water into one of the buildings.

People who live on the upper floors of the building will be allowed to return home once power and gas service is restored to the building.

But some of the people who live on the apartments on the ground floor won't be able to return, because the water did so much damage.

“I looked outside and all I saw was water,” said Jo Ann Moore, who was evacuated from her apartment.

Water everywhere, and nothing could stop it.

“It was seeping under the front door of our apartment and now our entire apartment is about 3 inches under water,” said Katelyn Keeton, who was also evacuated.

Keeton and her neighbors soon realized it was time to get out.

“Kind of devastating seeing everything under water,” she said.

That process was slowed down because so many cars were partially under water.

“My car was actually, [the water was] up over the wheel well and then they pulled it out,” said Mike Shortt, who was also evacuated. “Thank God for the tow truck to get us out of there.”

But Mike Shortt soon found out his car wouldn't start.

For others trying to move on, there is more bad news.

“I do not have flood insurance, they said. So they will not cover any of it,” said Moore. “I guess [I’ll] just start all over and start saving to buy what I need.”

But the complex let those with flooded apartments start moving into new ones by the end of the day — a day that ended much better than it began.

“There's not much you can do. You take what you get,” said Keeton. “God doesn't give you more than you can't handle.”

Crews spent much of the day pumping the water out so it would go down, and it has pretty much receded.

But there's still no word on when the other people who live there will be able to move back in.
