River above flood stage in Niles

By Tiffany Griffin

NILES — Heavy rains raised the St. Joseph River above its 11-foot flood stage in Niles Tuesday morning, but there were no reports of any serious damage.

In neighboring Cass County, the Road Commission was reported to be out of barricades to block flooded roads.

In Niles, estimates varied as to the river’s height, with officials at the Niles Fire Department reporting it at 11.5 feet and the Wastewater Treatment Plant listing it at about 4 inches above flood stage.

Ben Schott, meteorologist at the National Weather Service Office in North Webster, Ind., said he had received a report of 12 feet. He said he now expects the river will crest Thursday morning at roughly 12 to 12 feet 6 inches.

A Niles Fire Department spokesman said houses on Marmont Street near the treatment plant are likely to have water in their basements, but that’s likely to be the extent of Niles’ flooding problems.

Schott said the rain is expected to taper off Tuesday and be replaced by light snow by Thursday night.

"Our delve into tropical weather is coming to an end,’’ he said.

Cass County crews were planning to drive to Centreville in St. Joseph County (Mich.) to borrow barricades to close flooded roads in southeast Cass County.
