ELKHART COUNTY -- People who live in low-lying areas near creeks and rivers are very concerned. Some have been waiting nervously, watching the water rise. One particular spot is near Baugo Creek in Elkhart County.

By 10 a.m. Tuesday, the water rushed over the banks and into people's yards. The basement of at least one home on Creekwood Trail in Elkhart County was already flooded by noon.

Neighbors are very worried because the water is moving so quickly. Many left work early to keep an eye on the water levels and move their vehicles to higher ground.

But they say this round of flooding is different from all the other times.

"Last time it ws to the top [of my deck], but not as fast," said Gary Iwaniuk. "And everything over there is full, and it wasn't like that last time."

Pam Feist has lived on Creekwood Trail for 25 years. Her home rarely floods, but she told WSBT these flood waters remind her of 1996.

"That was the one time since I've lived here that we got flooded bad, and it actually washed my car down the street!" she remembered.

As of 12 p.m. Tuesday, the Elkhart County Emergency Management Agency said there weren't any mandatory evacuations. However, that could change at any time.

The Red Cross has a plan in place to open 3 shelters in the county if needed. If you choose to voluntarily evacuate, you should call 911 or the Emergency Management Agency. That number is (574) 535-6590.
