With rain ending, people near rivers still worried about flooding

By Jim Pinkerton

OSCEOLA — People moved cars and other belongings to higher ground Tuesday night as water continues to flood neighborhoods.

Elkhart County Emergency Management officials expect the water to continue to rise over the next several days with the rivers cresting Thursday.

Many people along Baugo Creek had decided to stay inside and just wait it out.

"It's Baugo Rapids right now. It's a lovely sound, but not in my yard," said
Lisa Sluder, who lives near Baugo Creek.

Baugo Rapids isn't a river. It's Creekwood Terrace beneath four feet of water.

"We just hope it doesn't come up to the windows and start Niagara falling through the windows," Sluder said.

Everyone is closely watching the rising waters and measuring its level.

"I'm looking at the neighbors mailbox and my husband is looking at his car tires in the driveway," Sluder said.

Earlier people were wading through the flowing water to move their cars to higher and drier land.

"It reminds me of '96. That was the one time since I've lived here that we got flooded bad and actually washed my car down the street," said Pam Seist, whose street is flooded.

Elkhart County Emergency Management is urging people living near the river to pick up sandbags at the Six Span Bridge or the highway maintenance garage on County Road 7.

They say they understand people are curious and want to know how high the water is, but they're asking them to stay away from flooded areas because it's causing traffic problems.
