NWS: South Bend flooding upgraded to ‘major’; same expected in Plymouth

The National Weather Service office in Syracuse has upgraded the forecast of flooding along the Saint Joseph River in South Bend from moderate flooding to major flooding.

At 7 a.m. Wednesday, the river was at 9.4 feet and rising, topping an earlier forecast crest of 8.7 feet. The river, which reaches flood stage at 5.5 feet, is expected to reach a final crest of 9.6 feet later Wednesday afternoon.

The NWS is also forecasting major flooding Wednesday and Thursday along the Yellow River in Plymouth.

By late Tuesday night, the river had nearly reached its 13-foot flood stage and is expected to spill over its banks Wednesday. The river is expected to reach a stage of nearly 16 feet Thursday night, leaving parts of the southern and eastern sections of the city under 1 to 3 feet of water.

The most recent flood event of this magnitude occurred in February 1995, when the river reached a crest of 15.7 feet.
