PLYMOUTH — For the first time in residents' recent memory, Jefferson Street was closed in Plymouth at the bridge over the Yellow River, effectively cutting travel at the city's main intersection as officials' worries over major flooding increased.
It's made traffic difficult early Thursday, especially for people trying to get to the high school and residents on their way to work, where some report seven-mile detours because of the bridge closure.
The closure of the city's main east-west route at North Michigan Street may be just the beginning, as the river's expected crest is not until 1 p.m. Friday and the National Weather Service warns of major flooding.
Near the river, the Hispanic welcome center Hearts and Hands, law and medical offices, a small bakery, bicycle shop and Scooter Warehouse were affected by the Yellow River's rise, as those who placed sandbags in recent days nervously wait to see if the level of protection will be enough.
Buildings historically affected by floods already are, including the Boys & Girls Club and the Conservatory Club, which is flooded out in the rear of the building.
It is as bad as it's been in a quarter-century, observers said.
"Unfortunately, this is only the beginning," Mark Senter, serving just days into his term as the newly elected mayor, said Monday evening.
And he appears to be right.
NIPSCO and Plymouth Police officials checked on the most at-risk businesses and residences overnight, as they shut off gas and electricity to about 30 homes because water had already reached an unacceptable safety level.
The Marshall County Chapter of the American Red Cross has set up a shelter at First United Church of Christ at 321 North Center Street.
More information will be available on the city's plan after a 9 a.m. update at the mayor's office. Howver, at 8 a.m. the following city roads were reported closed:
East Jefferson, between Michigan and Simon streets.
East Garro Street at the former G&G Plaza, from Water to Indiana streets
East LaPorte from Water Street to the river
Polk and Sering streets, east off of East Jefferson to Berkley Street.
Gill Park area streets are flooded behind the East Jefferson Boys & Girls Club
South Plum, South Walnut, and Schuyler streets off of Lake Avenue, from Pierce Street south
City officials remind residents they can still get additional sandbags at Hoffman Bros. Auto Parts Store on East Garro Street. Residents are asked to bring their own shovels.
