ELKHART — Flooding continues to cause problems in parts of Elkhart. On the city's east side, the De Camp Gardens neighborhood was hit hard.

Thirty-three homeowners were either evacuated or left voluntarily Wednesday night because of high water.

In some cases water went into homes and basements. A number of homeowners found the only way to get around the neighborhood was by boat.

"We've lived here for 10 years and we've had several floods, but nothing like this. This is definitely the worst thing we've ever seen,” said Denny Hoke. “We moved our van down the street here, so we could get in and out."

“We have water in our basement,” said Dwight Gunter. “Sump pumps pretty well keep it going as long as we keep the pumps going. We had one of them go out yesterday and my son brought me a new one. We’re alright. We're down to just one pumping right now."

Wednesday night, the water levels went up. Emergency crews had to go by boat to warn homeowners.

"They basically went door to door in those areas that had the rising water and basically offered to give them assistance to leave their homes, at least give them the encouragement to go ahead and leave, and help them to understand that there was a danger,” explained Deputy Chief Jon Simmons of the Concord Fire Department.

One resident who did not want to go on camera was one of those who did opt to evacuate as flood waters continued to rise in her home.

“We had about 3-4 feet of water in our basement,” she told WSBT News. “I have small children and was really concerned about the high water. It’s just really awful out here. It’s not safe for anybody to be here at this point in time.”

A big concern was the possibility of water seeping into electrical systems. Homeowners risked being shocked, or even electrocuted, if they came in contact with live wires or appliances.

To CFD are you kidding me? I beleive that your remarks are the joke here; it appears you have the brains of a fence post. I agree with DLUX that people need to take responsibility for their own actions and safety. A little common sense goes a long way you should try it sometime.

If it takes the fire dept. to come to your house in a boat to warn you of flooding, after you have been warned by the news for 5 days, then you deserve whatever happens to you. What ever happened to personal responsibility. Too many people want to blame someone else for their stupidity.

THAT IS HOW CONCORD RUNS THE FIRE DEPT. WHAT A JOKE! STATION 1 IS RIGHT NEXT TO THIS SUBDIVISON. TO LATE TO SLOW. I THINK ELKHART CITY SHOULD TAKE OVER THIS DEPT. AND CLEAN HOUSE. IF YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN. ASK THE HOMEOWNERS OF DE CAMP GARDENS. ASK THEM ABOUT THE PROBLEMS OF THIS JOKE OF A FIRE DEPT. OR JUST STAND BY AND WATCH THEM. YOU WILL SEE............

lol The newscast says" they used boats to warn residents of flooding" I think that if they had to use boats to warn them there is a good chance the residents already know of the flooding
