GRANGER — Some drivers are spending a lot of time each day waiting in traffic along State Road 23. But they don't like the state's plan to fix the problem.

The Indiana Department of Transportation wants to add two new lanes and a center turn lane on the mile stretch between Adams Road and Bittersweet Trail.

Many people wanted a five lane overpass at the railroad, but that isn't part of the plan. INDOT says it will consider a compromise.

Two lanes would remain like they are at the railroad crossing, but two others would become an overpass. Roundabouts would be added on both ends.

"I sit in this general stretch for two or three hours a day," said Justin Thompson, who drives the stretch several times a day.

INDOT hopes to reduce that time. Its $3 million plan widens State Road 23 between Adams and Bittersweet Trail to five lanes and adds sidewalks.

"You get backed up by the train or the traffic early in the morning, so I'm glad to see something's changing," said Mark Wozniak, another driver.

But not everyone at Thursday night's public hearing was satisfied.

"The intent is not to have people speeding from east and west," said Andy McGrail, who doesn't want the road widened.

One suggestion got everyone's attention. It would keep two lanes at the railroad crossing as they are, but it would add a two lane overpass over the tracks. The new suggestion would get rid of some problems a five lane railroad overpass would create.

"It would be a severe economic disadvantage to businesses if it were anything, but an at grade crossing, which would only give access at the end of the bridge," said Joshua Bingham, INDOT.

Eliminating that disadvantage would come at a cost, but INDOT isn't saying no yet.

"It's your guys' roads so we want to make sure it's what you want," said Bingham.

And what people want is just shorter commutes.

INDOT says it will consider this new plan. It would increase the cost and push the 2009 construction date back several years.
