ELKHART — Flood waters in Elkhart have caused damage to several area parks, as well as the city's River Walk area. That damage that cannot be repaired until the water levels go down.

Island Park in Elkhart is a favorite location in the summertime for many activities.

It’s surrounded by water on all sides, its seawalls unable to hold the water back.

"Well, this is just amazing,” said Kari Gathany, who uses Island Park. “I've never seen this look like this before. I've been here around ten years. Yeah, it’s just incredible.”

Part of the problem is the fact that Island Park is situated in somewhat of an inconvenient location as far as flooding is concerned. It sits where the St. Joseph and Elkhart rivers intersect.

"I have been with the department for 22 years and in 22 years, this is the worst flooding that I have ever seen,” Parks Superintendent Kaarin Frey told WSBT News. “The open air pavilion is completely surrounded. So the water has certainly done havoc here at Island. Not only just here but also along the River Walk."

"Most of the major damage right now has been done at the River Walk. We've had a few seawalls get washed out, washed away, and some sidewalks,” explained Park Manager Mike Lightner. “So, we're going to have to go back in there and fix those areas. Other than that, we've lost barrels, picnic tables, dumpsters."

At nearby American Park, a road leading to a bridge there was washed away.

Repairs will be in order once the flood waters subside.
