MISHAWAKA — Flood waters are finally receding along the St. Joseph River, but Indiana Michigan Power still had flood gates open Friday night and is operating its dam under emergency conditions.

Some people have called Elkhart Emergency Management and Indiana Michigan Power complaining about the dam not draining enough water.

On a normal day, 12 billion gallons flow through the Twin Branch dam, but this week, "We've had to open more gates to let more water flow through," said Dave Switzer, Indiana Michigan Power.

Despite that, sandbags are stacked along the river and many roads resemble rivers.

"This is Mother Nature. This isn't something we are doing to cause it. The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission requires all water flowing downstream to pass through the dam," said Switzer. "A lot of people think we arbitrarily say, 'Let's close the dam, so the water goes down.' We can't do that."

The federal commission determines that. A gauge measures the water level and automatically opens and closes the gates.

"The maximum it's ever reached is 30 feet above normal, and I think we are about 25 feet above normal, that's pretty high," said Switzer.

Indiana Michigan Power is closely monitoring the flood warnings. At this point, they anticipate keeping all the gates open until next week.

If the gates weren't open, the river would flood the homes upstream and wash the dam and plant building away.

Pass this on to the people that need the information most. Picture this: The flood is coming and you’ve got less than 24 hours. Imagine building a 300’ flood fighting barrier in less than 8 hours with just two men and a pick-up truck, or a mile of 3’ high barrier in 17 hours with a ten man crew. If live where it has flooded before, count on it flooding again. A better option than sandbags - www.floodwalls.com

You are all idiot's, Dam's do contribute to Global warming, damage to the environment, flooding etc. the reason there is no water is because they are holding it back to sell for power during the winter, this cause's flooding and they make a profit. DUH!

Did I see someone say inefficient power? What about those coal fired plants, gas fired, and nuclear powered? All of those do not use nature's forces to create electricity. Dams do not contribute to global warming, all others do. Nuclear might be clean power, but it's so dangerous to use it. I'd welcome a dam in my yard if I had a river, the sound of water rushing thru is relaxing! Makes for some great fishing too! We can not control nature, but we can use it.

Well Joe..looks like the egg is on your face. At least I can spell dam. Idiot. You are correct though...I have no idea why dans in the river, but I do know why the dams are there...for inefficient power generation.

Good...let the dam wash out and let the citizens have the water back. Ridiculous that you cannot travel down the river in St Joe county all the way.
